5. Joshua⁴ Spicer (Hardin G.³, Joseph², William¹) was born Traphill, North Carolina 24 October 1843. Joshua died 7 February 1930 at 86 years of age. His body was interred Moxley, North Carolina, Piney Grove Baptist Church.

He married Martha Jane Holbrook 18 November 1866. Martha was born Traphill, North Carolina 22 January 1839. Martha was the daughter of Ralph Holbrook Jr. and Nancy Spicer. Martha died 5 May 1932 at 93 years of age. Her body was interred Moxley, North Carolina, Piney Grove Baptist Church. As written by Eldon Joshua Woodruff: Joshua Spicer married Martha Jane Holbrook in 1866. She was born Jan. 22, 1839, died May 5, 1932. They lived on the middle prong of the Roaring River in a large Victorian two story house. He farmed, owned a tannery and for a time manufactured plug tobacco. His principal income was from the tannery from which he received a "toll" from the other farmers who brought their hides to be tanned. He in turn sold the hides to neighbors and merchants who needed them. When the leather accumulate reached a point he would load it into his wagon or wagons and go into surrounding areas selling and trading for other useful commodities along the way. I have heard him talk of their wagon trips to as far away as Fayetteville, N.C. sometimes in the dead of winter when the team and wagon could cross the streams the streams on ice without breaking through. My grandparents and family were devoted to their church contributing not only money and land but much time as well to the furthering of christianity. Their church was the Piney Grove Baptist where they remained members until death and are buried in the cemetery there.

Joshua Spicer and Martha Jane Holbrook had the following children:

+ 16 i. John Henry⁵ Spicer was born 21 October 1867.

17 ii. Joseph Charlie Spicer was born Abshers, North Carolina 1870. Joseph died 1871 at 1 year of age.

+ 18 iii. Nancy Frances Spicer was born 17 June 1872.

+ 19 iv. Martha Alice Spicer was born 19 April 1875.

+ 20 v. Mary Jane Spicer was born 16 May 1882.

21 vi. Joshua Thomas Spicer was born 1882. Joshua died 1883 at 1 year of age.
